Why Storytelling Doesn’t Work: Think “Craft” Rather Than “Tactic”

As much as stories permeate our ambitions, ministries, and legacies, the sad truth is that they don’t always work. Some stories are tedious, uninteresting, and dull. The worst stories can drive an audience away with rabid hate and complete disregard for any future endeavor. Poorly crafted stories can make preachers look like overly simplistic moralists who fail to grasp the truth of human tragedy, or—worse still—failed comedians whose Dad-jokes fall routinely flat.

This curriculum will help you learn that storytelling is a craft, not a copout. Stories must be well-told to be effective; understand the critical success factors for telling great stories and employ them to good effect in liturgy, homily, and missiology; and craft messages and stories that inspire audiences toward action.
