7 Motivations: Understanding How Best to Move Forward

Understanding why people behave in certain ways is critical to Church ministry—both in reserving our judgments and in helping them make meaningful spiritual progress. This understanding provides valuable insight into why we set goals, strive for achievement and power, why we have desires for psychological intimacy and biological sex, and why we experience emotions like fear, anger, and compassion. Best practice in ministry capitalizes on, rather than decries, the full range of human motivation and can assist people faithfully following God. This curriculum will help you become familiar with the varied types of motivations and their applications for ministry; move beyond judgment and toward helpful Christian service; and design programs, experiences, and offerings that assist people in their spiritual journey in ways that make sense to them (rather than us, our denominations, faith traditions, or personal preferences).
