Description
We most improve our writing by writing frequently, freely, on topics we choose, in forms we enjoy. And after we have written, we learn most about our voice through the feedback of our readers and peers who can help us understand when we’re being vague, cliche, or ‘get in our own way.’
To facilitate this exercise in a retreat-setting, it helps to begin with an existing piece of writing to adaptor/adopt. For our purposes at the Chapter House we will use key literary images from scripture.
This curriculum will help you read scripture with an eye toward unexplored themes and images; rewrite those themes and images in your Voice, driving toward your convictions with evocative language; learn to share what you’ve written, receive critique, and make changes that best suite your purposes and desires; and learn to provide helpful critique to another’s writing.
