Storytelling can be used to great effect in preaching, particularly when the story is not used to illustrate the preacher’s points but in lieu of the points themselves. Consider that “Catcher in the Rye” and “Avatar” both “preach”, but neither relies upon propositions in order to make their case. Rather, these stories reveal truth through the power of narrative, character, plot, and dimension. This curriculum will help you learn to differentiate between illustrating points with stories and telling a long-form story that, itself, delivers multiple points; get creative with homiletics to keep yourself sharp and your people engaged; and go deeper into narrative tension, provocation, and release to push yourself as an orator.
