Ostranenie: Learning to Defamiliarize Playfully

Ostranenie is a Russian word which means “strange.” The philosophy of ostranenie, popularized in art and literature, is that the familiar must be made strange before it can be fresh again. Only strangeness has the power to tear apart the veil of familiarity. For God’s mercies to be made “fresh every morning,” we need to find beauty in things we often overlook or disdain.

This curriculum will help you understand the value, and the process, through which we defamiliarize our faith, our scriptures, our symbols, and our God; and understand and apply the two main methodologies for defamiliarization.
